THE RISING STARS ACADEMY/HI-RISE TUTORIAL

Course Descriptions:

The Rising Stars Academy/Hi-Rise Tutorial program serves students in Kindergarten through 12th Grade. Students receive homework help, preparation for standardized tests (SBAC, CAHSEE, SAT), mentoring, mini lessons in reading, writing and math, computer access and integrated technology, and more? Parents of Elementary and Middle School Students may take advantage of educational seminars.

                                                 Tutors Needed
The Educational Ministry Cluster Leadership is seeking volunteer tutors for the Allen Temple
Baptist Church Hi-Rise Tutorial Program. Assignments require volunteers to serve 3 to 6
hours per week, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays providing homework help to children
in 1st to 8th grade.

Tutors are needed for the disciplines of:
    Language Arts
    Math
    Social Studies

 Learning Objectives:

  • Addressing educational needs of students who have or have not yet mastered general level content standards in English, Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Technology.
  • Provide activities in English, Mathematics and Science that will encourage critical thinking on the part of each student.
  • Developing written and oral language communication skills in order to be successful in today's society.
  • Assist students to utilize scientific methods to do experiments that allow them to derive at a conclusion i.e. targeting specific skills to develop such as observing, predicting, classifying, experimenting, organizing data or graph, algebra, geometry, analyze and statistics.
  • To develop interpersonal savvy we will provide one-on-one and small group tutoring on each grade level to access and work with student's individual strengths and weakness.
  • Assess students test taking skills related to the core curriculum and evaluate their success.
  • Computer-based instructions and other grade level materials will be available for enrichment at the completion of required homework assignments.
  • Collaborates with the church, school, parents and community leaders to help promote cultural events.

Reading for Comprehension:

Often we read texts for information, but it is also important that we develop strategies of reading in order to comprehend the materials posed by the instructors. We will consider the following for reading:

  • Survey the reading for key points. Try to figure out what it is all about...highlighting words and phrases.
  • Read the material carefully and comprehensively to make sure the student didn't miss something crucial.
  • The student must develop a sense of how and what, which will help answer the questions before reading it in detail.

The format will obviously vary from subject to subject, depending on the material being covered.

Science..........................................................................Monday & Thursday 6:10pm - 6:30pm

Fine Arts......................................................................Tuesday &Thursday  6:10pm - 6:30pm

Enrichment Activities..............................................Integrated with subject areas

(Computer classes are offered daily)
